DR. [Dans certaines villes du Sud-Ouest de la France, Bordeaux notamment, sous l'Ancien Régime] Magistrat municipal. Premier jurat, élire des jurats. À Bordeaux, l'office de maire (...) y rencontre, non le régime consulaire, mais une forme de municipalité plus ancienne, où le principal titre de magistrature était celui de jurats, titre qu'on retrouve dans une foule de villes, depuis la Gironde jusqu'au milieu de la chaîne des Pyrénées (THIERRY, Tiers État, 1853, p. 102). À Bordeaux, les intendants sont en lutte continuelle avec les habitants et les jurats (P. LAVEDAN, Urban., 1926, p. 25).
Prononc. et Orth. : []. Att. ds Ac. 1694-1878. Étymol. et Hist. 1461 (Ordonnances des Rois de France, t. 15, p. 374). Forme prov. correspondant au fr. juré et dont l'usage est passé en fr. pour rendre compte d'institutions du Sud-Ouest de la France. Attesté ds les Ordonnances des Rois de France pour la ville de Bordeaux en prov. (t. 15, p. 477 et 634), Juratz traduit le lat. médiév. juratus en 1215 dans des Coutumes de Bayonne (cf. K. BALDINGER, Lexikalische Auswirkungen der englischen Herrschaft in Südwestfrankreich, — 1152-1453 — ds Britannica, Festschrift für Herman M. Flasdieck, Heidelberg, 1960, pp. 22-23); l'infl. angl. dans les institutions de cette région expliquerait le même usage de juratus en Normandie, où la même infl. s'est fait sentir (cf. K. BALDINGER, loc. cit.).
